Straying Away From The Path

Every once in a while, we’ll stray from our paths.

Whether it be doing something we promised we wouldn’t do, foregoing discipline for a period of time, or not being the self we promised we’d be, it’s an up-and-down battle we have with ourselves.

🕰️ There will always be times where we don’t follow suit: we don’t follow our routine, our promises, our goals, etc....

But life is a marathon full of deviations, and one Stoic habit that I think is not practiced as much as it should be, is realizing our deviation and re-aligning our values again.

Interestingly enough, there’s no direct quote from Stoicism that discusses the feeling of being ‘lost’ for a period of time; however, indirect quotes can be applied to the topic:

📚 Quote of the Week 📚

“Not to be overwhelmed by what you imagine, but just do what you can and should.”

~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations (5.36)

If there’s anything to take away from this newsletter, it’s this:

🛣️ There will be periods of time where you don’t, for whatever reason, act in your highest standard; where you stray away from the original promise you made to yourself. And that’s okay.

What’s not okay is staying on that strayed path. What’s not okay is failing to recognize this event. You can and should go back to your highest standard after the realization, or else what are you working for? Pleasure? Vices? Money? In the long run, it’s more beneficial to keep to your standard, even if we fall off for a bit.

🛑 It’s okay to stray, but it’s not okay to stay.

I mentioned on my YouTube channel that I will not be posting any videos today because I am studying for finals. However, next week I will make a video about losing yourself, as seen in this newsletter topic, but finding yourself afterwards with a twist.

I intend to take a different directive approach for the next video, so please tune in and let me know what you think!
