Mentally Giving Up
Physical exhaustion tires your body.
Mental exhaustion eats you from the inside.
🥱When we’re physically exhausted, there are a lot of remedies: relaxing, sleeping, resting, etc…
🧠 But when we’re mentally exhausted, our minds gravitate to only one solution: giving up.
When our soul has had enough, we get thoughts like “Is this even worth it?” or “Why am I doing this?” Our mental exhaustion eats away at our discipline from the inside. We simply feel like kicking the can and throwing everything off the desk.
But Marcus Aurelius reminds us that it is a mistake to do so:
📚 Quote of the Week 📚
“Disgraceful: for the soul to give up when the body is still going strong.”
🏃 By physically giving up because of our mental exhaustion, we thwart one of our greatest gifts: perseverance.
🏳️ Thwarting perseverance essentially raises the white flag of surrender. We give up the difficult long-run for the short-term rest, knowing that the greatest minds of our generation have never accomplished anything by surrendering.
🛣️ On whatever venture you’re walking down, it will be difficult. It will most likely question why you’re walking down in the first place. It will give you mental exhaustion to heights you may not expect.
But who said it’s not supposed to be like that?
If success was certain and no risk was involved, greatness would no longer exist.
Cheers,
Betwixt
