Marcus Aurelius was an interesting individual if you truly think about it.

Why?

He could’ve had everything he ever wanted. He could have millions of dollars if he asked, he could have had thousands of wives if he wanted, he could’ve killed anyone he wanted with a snap of his fingers.

But he didn’t.

That’s truly a temptation to resist. Not a lot of people, if they truly thought about it, could genuinely do that.

So how did he do it? One quote comes to mind from his Meditations:

In the back of our mind, we know exactly what the good self acts like.

The good self is above temptation, above evil characteristics. The good self knows when to control themselves because control keeps them grounded.

The next time you are about to do something you kind of know is wrong, even in the slightest bit, genuinely reflect and ask yourself: “Is this what a good man/woman does?”
