No Evil Can Touch These

📜 Saturday’s Quote of the Day 📜

“But the soul can choose not to be affected, preserving its own serenity, its own tranquility. All our decisions, urges, desires, aversions, lie within.

No evil can touch them.”

~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations (8.28)

Things can be negatively influenced in the external world.

Cars can be damaged because of excessive wear and tear. Houses may not have electricity because of electricity grids failing. People can be stuck in a longer commute because of high traffic. Clothes can be permanently stained or ruined because of chemicals and mistakes… you get the point.

But do we have to be influenced by those externals? Certainly not.

No evil, no external, no vice, is in control of our decisions, urges, desires, unless we give it control; but ironically, that control is something we also control. We have the innate ability to decide if something will affect us, control us, or negatively influence us. It doesn’t have to if we choose not to.

Since we have that control, we are automatically independent beings. We have total control over our next action, our next thought, our next defense against desire and aversion, and our next decision.

Evil can’t touch that.

Evil only touches it when we allow it to.

Cheers,

Adam
